What do colleges think of a student with a 3.7 GPA but a C+ in an AP math course.?

so i'm taking this AP Calculus BC class at my high school. I am also doing running start (taking classes at the local community college and earning credits in high school and college at the same time) and have a 3..7 GPA. I usually get A's and B's, but last year in honors english i recieved a C+. This year in Math, there is a chance that i might recieve either a C+ or B-, but I'm hoping to get lucky and get a B. For college admissions, will better colleges reject me because of a C? what will they think of me?

It was my experience that colleges were more interested in your score on the AP itself than in the class. My college required a 4 on the AP to place out of the course, or a 3 to count the AP as an elective.

A few isolated C's won't bother most universities, as long as they don't indicate a pattern of struggling in a particular subject, or a downward spiral.

Colleges do take into account the difficulty level of a class when looking at your grades. I generally had low grades in honors math courses, but I had no trouble getting into (and making it through) a good engineering school.

If they ask about the low grade, be ready to explain why the grade was low, and what you intend to do in the future to improve your performance. Being able to do that might impress them more than an A would.
Reply:I know where I came from an honors/AP course counted an extra point on your GPA. So a C (2.0) would have counted as a B (3.0) in calculating the GPA. So you're probably ok. BC is a tough subject - it was the highest math offered at my high-school, and I went to a pretty decent school.

One tip though, that I wish someone had given me - if you're planning on taking any more math and science classes in college, you might want to consider only taking the AB exam, and retaking Cal II when you get to college. You'll do better because you've had the material before, and it will make the transition a lot easier if you're not trying to adjust to both being away at college AND taking killer classes all at the same time. My first year was tough that way. Good luck!
Reply:your other courses should speak to your academic capabilites. I wouldn't sweat it. Honestly, they have thousands and thousands of applications to go through. Just make sure your GPA is above the average that the college accepts. Otherwise, they may start to look deeper into your application and transcripts. Actually, even then, your getting C's and B's in high level courses, you are challenging yourself and not settling for A's in lower level courses. They will take that into consideration.
Reply:no they will not reject you for 1 your in ap math and u still have a 3.7 gpa your fine i had that same problem dont worry
Reply:Your GPA isn't all that matters, but think of it this way. Would you want a C doctor giving you brain surgery? They may look at it and not like it or they may look at other things too. The key is to be really well rounded, do a lot of volenteering and community servace, or you have to stand out in some way. Like music, sports, ect.

What they will think of you though, is not just your GPA and your C, but also your strengths and weaknesses.
Reply:They will look at the C and think why are you applying before they see that you are taking AP Honors classes. Once they realize the classes you are taking they will find it impressive. Don't worry; I also had a 3.7 GPA and got Cs in my Honors classes so I know how you feel. However, I got accepted to good colleges; I just didn't go to them.
Reply:A lot of my friends are in the same situation. They all got in where they wanted to. One bad mark on your report won't matter hardly at all.

AP Calc is really hard (I just finished it). Kudos for sticking it out. You'll be fine. Don't stress about it too much.
